approved by the Guardian Council on October 2nd, 2019.78 Before this date, Article 976 of the
Iranian Civil Code provided that only children born of Iranian fathers could be granted
citizenship.
The passing of the aforementioned law and the consideration of the draft law on violence against
women currently under Parliament’s review do not significantly alter the general Iranian
framework, which remain discriminatory towards women and in violation of Iran’s international
legal obligations. The Islamic Republic of Iran has not amended the vast majority of its laws
which discriminate against women and prevent the equal and full enjoyment by women of their
civil, political, social and economic rights, including the right to freedom of movement, the right
to work and the right to be free from discrimination, especially in the workplace.
