Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights defenders A/HRC/34/52/Add.1 para 393 Full recommendation: The Special Rapporteur acknowledges that the Government refutes the allegations, nevertheless, he remains seriously concerned that the charges seem to be directly related to their legitimate work as human rights defenders and lawyers, as well as the legitimate exercise of their rights to freedom of opinion and expression and freedom of association. As such, he urges the Government to take all necessary action to release the imprisoned defenders. Assessment In the above-mentioned recommendation, the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights defenders refers to three then imprisoned defenders: Ms. Narges Mohammadi, Mr. Abdolfattah Soltani, Mr. Arash Sadeghi. Mr. Abdolfattah Soltani was conditionally released in November 2018.1 Ms. Narges Mohammadi was released in October 2020.2 As of February 2021, Mr. Arash Sadeghi remains in detention, reportedly in a deteriorating state of health.3 The Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran has not taken all necessary action to release Mr. Arash Sadeghi.
